Bridging the gaps of community through muralism,
Community engagement & peer mentorship
Biography
Jah’Nyah Spencer is a visual artist & creative director using muralism to uplift youth across MA. While Spencer’s style draws inspiration from Western and Japanese cartoons, it is deeply expressive, often portraying portraits with diverse features and dynamic emotions. With her murals located across the Greater Boston Area, her work has also been shown in solo & group exhibitions in MA and Japan.
Born in LA in 2003, Spencer grew up surrounded by a family of reggae musicians and entertainers. Her great-grandfather was Joe Higgs, commonly known as the “Father of Reggae” and the teacher of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Jimmy Cliff. Though music was her first love, visual art and writing quickly became additional passions, and she dreamed of creating art that could positively impact the world. She was fascinated by how storytelling can reach us on a soul level; revealing what we hide from ourselves, similar to how music does. In 2020, while Spencer was a junior in high school, she dedicated herself to her artistry throughout the pandemic. Since then, her work has been covered by The Boston Globe, NBC10Boston, Itemlive, KanazawaTV (Kaga, Japan), and many more.
Spencer’s work explores BIPOC centered stories, coming-of-age, and pop culture, while simultaneously tapping into the spirit world. Whether she’s creating an original character or a portrait in someone’s likeness, her goal is to capture the subject’s “spiritual essence”; the energy that lives beneath the surface. By weaving in vulnerability and personal truths, she offers viewers a mirror, inviting youth all over the world to reflect on something within themselves that they’ve kept quiet and acknowledge their true strengths.
